Roaches in the Compost! I Don't Want Them to Come into the House

January 2, 2025

Hello! I have successfully composted in four other states but am failing here in NM! I need help. Our full 96 gal bin is overrun with roaches. We are at wits end and want to offload the entire pile and start fresh, unless you have tips for us. I'd spread it out and use diatomaceous earth but I don't want them running to the house - our yard is small. Can you offer any tips? You are our last stop before we bag and take it to the dump, which I don't want to do.

Compost is Slow

January 12, 2025

I attended the beginners composting class back in October, and started composting a few weeks after in October. My compost container has been getting full, and since it's been about 3 months since I started, I decided to try to empty the container onto a tarp and see if the compost was ready. It didn't really look like compost to me, and I wasn't sure if that was because of time or if there is something I should be doing differently. I would greatly appreciate any insight you have to offer. Attached is a photo. Thanks.

Night Crawler Worms are Ruining My Lawn

February 15, 2025

We are looking for information about how to get rid of the overabundance of night crawler worms that have destroyed our lawn. We are at our wits end. They are not "good" worms for our lawn, as they are the circumference of my little finger and can be as long at eight inches. Would you like to come visit us in the northeast heights and see what we're talking about? We would greatly appreciate any information/suggestions/ideas you may have. Thank you very much!

What Kind of Paper to Use for Vermicomposting

February 17, 2025

I have worm boxes as well as a compost tumbler. My zip code is 87108. I am wondering what kinds of paper are and aren’t okay to add to each kind of setup (worms and tumbler). Is  shredded junk mail okay to use? Other kinds of “office” paper?

Where to Purchase Bokashi Grains

March 2, 2025

I am a new resident of Albuquerque interested in starting Bokashi composting. Could you recommend a local source for some Bokashi grains, or should I order them online?  Thank you for your guidance.

How to Compost Biodegradable Plastic

March 9, 2025

I 3D print lots of PLA (Polylactic Acid), a compostable organic polymer, but have so far found no practical way to compost my PLA waste. "For PLA to compost properly, it needs to reach hydrolysis conditions to break the long plastic chains into shorter units microbes can digest, which means getting it heated to the glass point (around 55C) in the presence of water for an extended time." I don't imagine you have a solution for this, but others printing PLA out there might constitute enough demand to warrant a solution. Have you had any other inquiries on this?
