Can I Compost Coffee Pods?

Question

December 19, 2024

I recently purchased coffee from Costco.  The label shows that the pods and the bags are "Commercially Compostable Only".  Is this something that is available in the Albuquerque area?

Answer(s)

Answer by WR: I'm not 100% sure but I think the city would take them when they do the twice-a-year yard-waste pickup if you don't mind saving them up till those  biannual pick-ups (which is a noble thing to do!)  (Other fellow Master Composters please let us know if you think this is incorrect.)  Details for the cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho are the last two bullet points on this web page from our site: https://www.nmcomposters.org/organics-drop-off  Others from our group might also write with other suggestions. Good luck and thanks for wanting to do this.

Answer by RR: This won’t help you with your current supply of pods, but for future reference, you can get reusable pods online for cheap. Then buy coffee in bags, empty the used coffee grounds anywhere (potted plants, worm bin, even just on or in the ground), then throw the pods in the dishwasher.
